My Journey: From Single Teen Mom to Tech Industry Success

Hey everyone,

Welcome to the first edition of Pivot & Thrive Digest! I’m Erica Rivera, and I’m thrilled to embark on this journey with you. Today, I want to kick things off by sharing a bit about my story, because I believe in the power of our unique paths and how they shape our future successes.

My Path | Laying my whole heart on the table

At 16, I was a single mom and a high school dropout. The odds were definitely stacked against me. But I refused to let my circumstances define my future. I went back to school, worked tirelessly in the restaurant industry, and eventually broke into the tech industry. I’ve had the privilege of working at amazing companies like Indeed and Google. But the journey wasn’t easy.

As a multi-passionate individual, I loved exploring different fields and learning new skills. However, this made it difficult for me to narrow down a career path. I constantly felt alone and misunderstood, like I didn’t fit into any conventional mold. Coming from a non-traditional background, I had to overcome numerous barriers and learn how to tell my career story in a compelling way. Building confidence and resilience became crucial parts of my journey.

There were times when I felt unseen and unheard, and many moments when I felt lost and defeated. But through perseverance, I learned to embrace my diverse interests and use them to my advantage. I discovered the power of connecting my varied experiences to create a unique professional narrative that set me apart.

Now, I share this journey with you because I know many of you feel the same way – unseen, unheard, and misunderstood. But I want you to know that your unique path is your strength. I’ve been in your shoes, and now I walk side by side with people like you as you navigate your own paths. Together, we can turn your diverse experiences into your greatest asset.

The Power of Multi-Passionate Professionals

As multi-passionate individuals from non-traditional backgrounds, we often feel like we don’t fit into a single box. And guess what? That’s our superpower! Embracing your diverse interests and skills can open doors to unexpected and fulfilling career paths. Here are some tips on how to leverage your unique background.

Tip of the Week: Crafting Your Unique Value Proposition

  • Identify Core Strengths: Make a list of your top skills and experiences from different fields. These diverse strengths make you adaptable and innovative.

  • Connect the Dots: Show how your varied experiences contribute to your problem-solving abilities and unique insights. Employers value innovation and creativity, which often come from a multi-passionate perspective.

  • Create a Personal Brand Statement: Develop a clear, concise statement that encapsulates who you are, what you bring to the table, and how your diverse background is an asset. For example, "I combine my background in education and tech to create innovative learning solutions that bridge the gap between technology and human-centered design."

Networking for Introverts from Non-Traditional Backgrounds

Networking can be daunting, especially if you’re introverted or come from a non-traditional background. But building connections doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some practical tips to help you network in a way that feels comfortable and authentic.

Tips for Introverts:

  • Start Small and Focused: Attend smaller events or virtual meetups where you can have more intimate, meaningful conversations. Research attendees beforehand and identify a few key people you’d like to connect with.

  • Prepare Your Story: Practice a brief introduction that includes your background and what you’re looking to achieve. Having a prepared story can help ease anxiety.

  • Engage in Online Communities: Join online forums and groups related to your interests. Participate in discussions, share your insights, and offer help where you can. This builds your presence and makes in-person networking easier.

  • Follow Up Thoughtfully: After meeting someone, send a personalized follow-up message referencing your conversation. This shows that you’re genuinely interested in building a connection.
